The military's highest ranking officer, Admiral Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has wrote an essay in Joint Forces Quarterly, a military officer journal, warning troops that politics does not have place during a mission, in a camp, or in a cockpit. It is the military's duty to serve its civilian authority and uphold the Constitution as he puts it. However, I think there are times when such duty cannot be fulfilled. In times of great turmoil and unrest, leaderships do not reflect the will of the people, including those that serve. So remember, no politics while on mission [that I understand and would also suggest, "always place the mission first"] but no politics anywhere else while serving? That I do not support. Wake up.
Here's the NY Times story.
Later,
